This Swine Life: Hog Named Six Seven Pardoned by Miami Dade County Leader.
It might not have been at the same level as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the onset of a current administration.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a long and happy life free from concern.”
The gathering, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, donated by a first responder, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “6-7” – inspired by a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The craze became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently made “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Future Secured
Six Seven the pig is now destined to live out its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to begin the end-of-year celebrations,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It represents the character of Miami: vibrant, multicultural, and based in heritage that unite the community. Each year, we are delighted to mark culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and strong coffee as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
