The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series by the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It showcases the beloved group of outcasts, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching personal histories for key figures such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
All in all, the intro looks stunning. However, I felt that an element was missing in the music selection.
This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song created by artist the talented musician. This piece from the official score of the same name, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by musician the artist, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the track was catchy and fun. Back then, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, Critical Role has already said that the series will have some changes and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening seems to be among these.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on Spotify and the video site.
