The Details Known Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 lives were killed and more than 40 were wounded when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were taken to the hospital.

The deceased are still awaiting officially identified, but investigators think their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the attack, stating they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, a senior official said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with a number in serious condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he heard “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
