LA Faces Historic High Temperatures Only One Week Following Severe Winter Weather.
After enduring significant rainfall that resulted in floodwaters across parts of the city, LA is now seeing abnormally warm conditions for late February.
Record-Shattering Heat
On Friday midday, the mercury soared to ninety-one degrees Fahrenheit in central LA, per data from meteorologists. This exceeds the prior high for February 27th, which was 31 degrees Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) and was recorded in the previous year.
"Exceptionally warm weather" were highlighted on official graphics for the region.
Public Health Alerts
Authorities issued a warning that Friday's conditions posed an "elevated risk for heat illness" for vulnerable populations. Their recommendations included:
- Drinking plenty of fluids.
- Avoiding outdoor activities during the peak heat of the day.
- Never leaving children or pets unattended in a parked vehicle.
An Extreme Reversal
This sharp rise in heat comes on the heels of a massive storm system that struck the area recently. That storm unleashed heavy snow, strong winds, and thunderstorms to higher elevations, causing mudslide risks for many residents.
Tragically, the severe weather also resulted in a large avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.
Weekend Outlook
Looking ahead some relief is expected. Temperatures were forecast to drop to around 61°F (16°C) in central Los Angeles by late Friday.
Additional areas that reached ninety degrees included Burbank, Woodland Hills, and Long Beach. Elsewhere, Westwood, Camarillo, Santa Maria, and Oxnard were projected to experience the high 80s.
Over Saturday and Sunday, downtown LA can expect temperatures in the eighties, with a further cooldown on tap for the week ahead.
