Jamaican Icon Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Legend and Cultural Icon, Passes Away at 81 Years of Age
Global audiences grieves the passing of the iconic Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican-born musician and performer whose distinctive voice was instrumental in popularizing the reggae genre across the globe. The artist passed away at the age of eighty-one.
“With deep sorrow that I announce that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure followed by pneumonia,” posted his wife Latifa on social media. “I am thankful for his family, close friends, fellow artists and coworkers who shared his journey. To all his supporters globally, please know that your support was his motivation during his entire professional life … Jimmy, my dear, may you rest peacefully. I will honor your wishes.” Her post was also signed by their children, their son and daughter.
Cliff was beloved for hits including “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, “I Can See Clearly Now” and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His upbeat musical style and positive spirit earned him a vast and longstanding fanbase.
In addition to his music achievements, Cliff starred in the 1972 drama film “The Harder They Come”, a performance that received critical praise and is considered a landmark of Jamaican cinema.
He is one of just a handful of musicians, including the legendary Bob Marley and other greats, to be honored with the esteemed Order of Merit from Jamaica.
