British Designer Antony Price, Famed for Designing for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer behind some of the most iconic looks associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, including the light-hued ensembles that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."
His passing follows shortly after he unveiled his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to merge menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting body-hugging looks made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as several ensembles for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
- Performative Style: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
- Gender-Fluid Fashion: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
- Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.
The industry mourns the loss to a authentic original whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
