Arctic Blast Grips the Great White North as US Records Hottest Christmas in History.
Northern Canada has been gripped by a severe and lengthy Arctic outbreak, with temperatures hovering between -20C and -40C for weeks. This week, the Yukon community of Braeburn saw the mercury drop to -55.7C, its coldest December temperature since 1975.
Consecutive Nights Below -40C
In addition, the locales of Mayo and Dawson suffered through 16 consecutive nights colder than minus 40 degrees, with the temperature in Mayo bottoming out at -50.4 degrees Celsius on Monday. The capital, Whitehorse, likewise saw 10 nights when the cold dipped under -30 Celsius.
The deep freeze spread farther south during the holiday season. On Christmas Day, overnight temperatures in Edmonton fell below -28C.
Boxing Day was expected to bring lows of at least -20C in numerous areas, from Edmonton in the west to Quebec in the east.
Forecast to Persist Through Early January
The severe cold is forecast to persist through the start of January. Authorities have cautioned about potential power failures in the Yukon soon, as the territory’s power grid comes under strain from record-high energy demand.
The lengthy cold snap originates from the Arctic vortex settling over Canada for much of December, which funnels frigid northern air southward. The frigid dome is projected to gradually withdraw north allowing more temperate air from the Pacific to sweep across the United States and penetrate southern Canadian regions.
Pronounced Disparity with US Warmth
Conversely, sections of America recorded the hottest December 25th in their history as temperatures soared about 15-30C above the seasonal average. In many areas, conditions felt more typical of April or May than late December.
Several states set Christmas Day temperature records. In Oklahoma, Oklahoma City hit 25C on Tuesday, surpassing the previous peak of 22C set in 1982. Cities including Austin and Dallas, in Texas, and Charlotte, North Carolina also logged readings above 25 degrees Celsius.
High-Pressure System Sustains High Temperatures
Unseasonable heat is predicted to persist for the remainder of the week and beyond, with unseasonable heat forecast to sweep through the American Southeast soon.
The unseasonable temperatures are powered by a powerful high-altitude ridge extending from the desert south-west towards the north and east, establishing a classic heat-dome pattern. Such a configuration results in a widespread high-pressure system blanketing a significant part of the landmass, effectively capping warm air at lower altitudes. Descending air compresses and adiabatically warms, fostering the buildup of exceptional warmth.
